Simply Dressed: Using Pinterest to build outfits can help inspire you to create outfits from pieces you already have in your own closet and put together new and fresh wardrobe choices without having to purchase anything! One mom shares how she created several outfits for fall using things she already owned. | CreativeHomeKeeper.com

One of the topics I discuss in my new eBook Simply Dressed: Inspiration to Dress for the {Everyday} Ordinary Days is using Pinterest as inspiration to build outfits. I love browsing Pinterest for style inspiration, in fact outfits are probably one of my favorite things to pin. (Did you know I have an entire board dedicated to clothing inspiration called Simply Dressed?)

I firmly believe that pinning outfits can help you hone in on your personal style if you are not sure what that is. Pinterest is such a great tool to highlight styles, color combinations and accessories. There are two chapters in Simply Dressed where I talk about creating a personal style board on Pinterest and then to use that inspiration, as well as the pieces that you have in your closet, to build ready-to-go outfits to help you on those mornings when you feel less than inspired to get dressed.

What I love about fall fashion is how easy it is to layer. In my personal opinion outfits always look better when the rule of “three” is applied: 3 layers, textures or colors.

I think that is why I never feel put together during the hot months of summer when all I want to wear is a lighter shirt and skirt or shorts. With fall it is so easy to begin layering with scarves, cardigans, jewelry and fun shoes, riding boots are among my favorite!

Using Pinterest as a source of inspiration to build outfits is fun and easy but you do need to remember one thing… you’re not trying to build identical outfits, you are building outfits with similar layers, colors or textures. If you try to copy exactly what you see, you are probably going to set yourself up for failure and frustration, not to mention blowing your entire clothing budget. It’s unrealistic to think that every single clothing pin is going to be something that you have in your closet.

Instead of trying to copy, look for similar prints and colors that you already have in your closet.

What style themes keep repeating over and over that you are pinning? What colors are you drawn to? As I scanned through my Pinterest board I quickly discovered, very true to myself, that I like a lot of natural colors, cardigans, boots and flats. I like casual outfits with touches of flair to dress them up. I like classic, clean styles with intermittent trendy skinny jeans paired with flats or boots.

I wanted to give you some very specific examples of how I am personally using Pinterest to build outfits. First though a little note, since I’m currently pregnant (and wearing the same two pants paired with the same 5 shirts over and over) I decided to take pictures of some of my favorite outfits that I wear when I’m not pregnant, since these will be what I go back to after pregnancy.

I love the simple outfit of fitted jeans, flats, a stripped shirt layered with a scarf. This outfit uses the color scheme of black and Fuchsia.

Since I don’t have accessories that are are Fuchsia, I used what I had… red accents. I paired my fitted, bootcut jeans with my black and white stripped shirt. To add a little something extra, I added a red scarf and my favorite pair of red flats. This outfit is simple, practical for everyday wear and makes me feel great.

First off I love the combination of blues, browns and darker oranges. Add some fun flats and you have a complete outfit.

I have a similar plaid button down shirt that I usually wear with a white or gray camisole underneath (not pictured). I didn’t have a dark orange cardigan but I do have a red one that pairs with the blue nicely. To finish off the look I added my super comfortable brown and tan stripped flats with a little button accent on top.

I love simple shirts paired with a plain pair of jeans. I also love how adding a few simple accessories can add a little something special to what may appear plain and boring to some. I should also add that I wear my pearl stud earrings everyday and I love that they pretty much go with everything.

Simple gray t-shirt, same bootcut fitted jeans, canvas TOMS and my favorite linen white scarf with gray and navy strips that I scored on clearance last fall at Target for under $3. Gotta love clearance finds!

It should be noted that brown riding boots paired with skinny jeans are my favorite fall and winter fashion trend. I love how the Pinterest inspired outfit pairs a flowing, turquoise tunic with a simple scarf and fitted pants. As you can see from my photo, I have a similar pair of boots that I love. My silk, flowing tunic is actually a lighter lilac color which is perfect for not only fall but also for spring as well. I usually wear a gray camisole under. I also added a light brown scarf to add an extra layer. When I was taking the photo I forgot to swap out my bootcut jeans for my skinny jeans but you get the idea for the inspired outfit!

This was one of my favorite outfits that I wore a lot last fall and can’t wait to wear again next fall, when I don’t have a watermelon as a belly 😉 Similar to the Pinterest inspiration, I paired a long, flowing, orange silk tunic over a pair of black leggings. Add in a purple light weight cardigan and my favorite pearl necklace and I have an outfit that is comfortable enough to wear at home yet dressy enough to wear for date night or church. The actual colors of my outfit are deeper than what the photo shows (I had a poor phone camera) but as you can see, this outfit is probably the closet match to my Pinterest Inspiration.

Each of my Pinterest inspired outfits are similar, yet different, than the actual pins. I used them as inspiration to match styles I liked and then used what I already had in my closet to build similar outfits that helped me to dress for the {everyday} ordinary days.
